As a young child, Zack Anderson remembers sitting in his yard, watching as father Terry Anderson hit golf ball after golf ball.

The tables turned once Zack Anderson entered Iowa; it was Terry Anderson, the college coach, who would do the watching during practice every day.

While the redshirt sophomore described having his father as a coach as a great experience, he said he considered Terry Anderson only as a coach at the course, his father off of it.

"It was nice to share both roles, but as part of the team, I just wanted to be like any other player," Zack Anderson said.

The coach-only mentality that the younger Anderson held on the course aided him through the difficult winter months, with his father's leave of absence and speculation on whether he would return to coaching.

"I dealt with it away from the course with him being my dad, and then when I was on the course, I just had coach [Adam] Kaufman be my new coach," Zack Anderson said.

The speculation finally ended March 29, when Terry Anderson resigned as head coach of the Iowa men's golf team.

The news was a relief to Zack Anderson - no longer would he or his teammates have to endure the questions about the team's 13-year leader and his possible return.

The younger Anderson said he's pleased that his father is once again happy with the state of his life and the opportunities that lie ahead of him, as well as for the team now that it has a definite leader for the remainder of the season - at least until a coaching search gets underway at the end of the spring campaign.

While he may have been away from his son on the course, Terry Anderson still understands how well he handled this difficult situation.

"[Zack] been a trouper," he said. "It hasn't deterred him at all.

"It's got to be tough on him, but he's walked a very good line, a nice little quiet leader."

As both the elder and younger Anderson's paths now begin to separate, Terry Anderson did have advice for his son as he continues in his golfing career.

Like most fatherly suggestions, Zack Anderson said his dad told him to continue to do what he has been doing - working hard in both in the classroom and on all aspects of his game - and if he puts forth his best effort, good things will come from that.
