As expected, Mitt Romney won the Iowa straw poll held in Ames today with 31 percent of the votes after 90 minute delay due to mechanical problems.

Much more uncertainty surrounded the remaining order of candidates however, with a number of 2008 Presidential hopefuls seen as contenders for second place. Ultimately, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee took that slot. Traditionally the straw poll has also winnowed the field of Republican candidates vying for the White House and also serves as an important fundraiser for the Iowa Republican Party.

Over 14,000 people voted in the straw poll, nearly 10,000 fewer than 1999, the last time the event was held.

As the only big name Republican presidential candidate participating in the event, the former Massachusetts governor was largely seen as a shoo-in for first place.

Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani announced earlier in the summer that they would not be participating in the Iowa event. Former Tennessee Gov. Fred Thompson, who has not officially announced his candidacy, also did not attend but. All three men were still on the ballot.

Thompson, who has been campaigning actively around Iowa, has said that he will drop out of the race if he did not place first or second in the event.

The full order of candidates and their total vote tallies:

Mitt Romney - 4516

Mike Huckabee - 2587

Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback - 2192

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo - 1961

Texas Rep. Ron Paul - 1305

Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson - 1039

Fred Thompson - 203

Rudy Giuliani - 183

California Rep. Duncan Hunter - 174

Sen. John McCain - 101

Chicago Businessman John Cox - 41

Go Mike Huckabee! Huckabee came in second and has no buses, hotel rooms or fancy food for his supporters. Mitt Romney spent millions for the straw poll. (Continued…)

I think the significant result of the Rep.
Straw Poll was the reduced turn-out - 10,000 fewer that eight years ago. Bush/Cheney have alienated a lot of people. (Continued…)
