UI President Sally Mason announced her support of arming UI police Wednesday afternoon.
The decision comes about a week before the Iowa Board of Regents will discuss the gun issue at their meeting in Council Bluffs.
The UI Faculty Council, the UI Faculty Senate, and UI Student Government voted in favor of providing UI police with guns.
"The University community embraces and celebrates openness, yet also understands that there are people who will take advantage of that openness, including people with weapons," said Mason in a statement.
The University of Northern Iowa faculty Senate voted against the arming proposal, while the Iowa State Faculty Senate voted in favor.
UI officers have been unarmed since the 1960s. Charles Green, the assistant vice president for the UI police has said UI officers get the same training as any other Iowa police.
