Shooter in Iowa City area

A shooter driving a minivan is in the Iowa City area, UI officials reported Monday morning.
Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting at an east side Iowa City address.
"Yes, there are multiple fatalities," said Jessica Lown, a spokewoman from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Officials had, at least for a time, locked down the UI residence halls. UI officials said there is "no specific threat" to any UI employees or buildings.
UI spokesman Steve Parrott said classes will continue.
"As far as I know it's legitimate, but I don't have any other information right now," Parrot said.
Currier officials, who asked not to be named, told students on Monday morning to avoid traveling on main roads.
An emergency alert from the UI described the shooter as a white man, in his 40s driving a 1998 tan Toyota Sienna minivan with an Iowa License plate 501 BLO.
Neighbors of Steve Sueppel, who lived on Barrington Road, confirmed Monday morning that Suppel owned the minivan described in the release.
They described him as the father of several children, and a nice guy. Monday morning, neighbors stood outside of Sueppel's house, expressing shock that he might be the alleged shooter.
"He was a friendly, a nice guy. I only knew him by a face a handshake," said neighbor Robert Russell. "Everyone in this neigborhood is nice, real nice."
Sueppel served as the vice president and controller at Hills Bank and Trust, and last month was indicted by a grand jury on charges of stealing approximately $560,000 from his employer.
The release advised residents that, "If you see [the minivan] call 911 from a safe location to report shooter sighting."
A supervisor at the police department said he couldn't give any more information about the incident.
"We're just asking people to be on the lookout," Parrott said.

As a parent and as a student during the shootings that happened at the UofI in 1991, I would really wonder why officials are not telling these students to stay home at least until they have the alleged shooter in custody or more information. (Continued…)

This is not very helpful. You would think the University would be a bit more explicit in their instructions.
